Be prepared to salivate. Our friends at National Geographic have just launched a tasty initiative called Foods of the World that we wanted to spread the word about. This tantalizing program includes an online store with spices, teas, cheeses and more from 20-odd regions and countries around the world. The food offered is provided by small local producers.
"In choosing to work with small purveyors....this ensures that consumers receive fresher, higher-quality products in a way that also benefits the people of the community that crafted the food," said John Dumbacher, senior vice president for National Geographic Licensing.
Foods of the World also offers country-themed "Escape Gift Baskets," a collection of a country's culinary stars. Beyond the online store, the program has also set up World Food Clubs, which delivers a monthly package of goodness right to your doorstop (choose from oils and vinegars, cheeses, chocolates, etc...). Another feature is the recipes section, which includes guest recipe suggestions as well and instructions for preparing breads, seafood, soups and more from regions across the globe.
If you've browsed around enough to develop a craving to travel, consider National Geographic's Culinary Adventure in la belle France, and visit small family-run farms while criss-crossing the bucolic countryside. Tastings will, of course, be ample.
