This is a strong tradition throughout the Baltics that goes back for at least 150 years. The Estonian version is called Laulupidu and is the focus of the recently-released documentary film "The Singing Revolution". Highly recommended. http://www.singingrevolution.com/

Thanks Andrew!

My mother and her family fled Latvia in 1944. She has been back twice before, but this was the first time for me and my sister. The visit was a week long festival of music and dance which brought me to my roots that I never knew. I am so proud to be part Latvian! We were soooooo impressed with the Latvian people and their national pride. It has changed my life!
