We stayed at the Ranch in November and while we were down at the beach, we got into a long talk about the tension around tourism on Molokai. The nice guy behind the desk said this: What am I gonna do? Work at the market in Kaunakakai? I have a good job here that lets me feed my family...

I feel sad about the ranch closing. It was so quiet when we were there that I have the (faulty) sense that I know the people that lost their jobs.

Plus, in a more frivolous concern, it was an awfully nice place, the bathrooms at the Lodge were some of the nicest I've seen. Not fancy, just Really Well Done.

It was unclear whether Molokai Ranch's proposed plans to build 200 luxury homes around Laau Point, opposed by many residents, will be affected by the ranch's closure. The master plan stipulates that Laau Point would be the last development on ranch lands outside the resort area.

the fallout continues. the ranch also supplied water and sewage service to 1200 homes and plan to stop that in August--the state trying to stop it.
