If you go to the Ring of Kerry (and you should, it's lush and lovely), think about a day at the beach.

Our family had some good, cheap fun at a gorgeous sandy beach near Caherdaniel a few years ago. We packed a picnic lunch and spent the afternoon climbing boulders and beachcombing.

Go only if the weather is nice though--a big if.

Thanks for this great quide! Galway is a must-see. A gorgeous, a nice university town with a laid back vibe. There is a really picturesque harbor where swans swim in front of the brightly-colored townhouses. But my big regret about a trip to Ireland was not getting out to the coast or out to an island, so try to tack on Aran if you can -- sounds neat!

Reader Jeff Cudd submitted this option via email:

I would suggest they rent a camper van, albeit the biggest one available and drive the country of Ireland buying the Govt. Bed and Breakfast book and staying in different B & B's. This is a family adventure they will never forget. The price of a van and driver is not unreasonable either than the whole family can relax and enjoy. This way the guide is built in for all tours and he will have the inside scoop on all things to see.
