Really great post. It's so intersting to read a discussion not just on whether visiting poor urban areas is worth doing, but more specifically about the best ways of going about doing it. It's encouraging to know that (some) people want to seek out these opportunities and knowledge. Anyway, way to go IT.

Neuwirth makes some great points. Even if you're not comfortable venturing into a favela, just taking the bus gives you an entirely different perspective from the one you'd get in a resort.
